ASA uses AI to police ads at scale
The advertising regulator no longer waits for complaints — and published rulings can follow proactive monitoring.
Background
The UK Advertising Standards Authority has deployed its own AI-based Active Ad Monitoring system for proactive compliance work, moving beyond a model driven primarily by consumer complaints.
Three key points
1. The scale of proactive monitoring is new. In one sweep, the ASA's system scanned 362,000 ads from major UK travel agents for misleading environmental claims. This kind of volume was not possible through complaint-led casework alone. The ASA's strategy commits to continuing and expanding proactive monitoring.
2. Proactive findings can lead to published rulings. Ads identified only through the monitoring system, with no consumer complaint at all, can result in a formal published ruling. Ads that have run without apparent issue are not immune from scrutiny simply because no one complained.
3. Focus areas in 2026 include influencer disclosures and children's advertising. The ASA is expected to scale up its AI monitoring system in 2026, with particular attention to influencer non-disclosure and advertising targeted at or seen by children, alongside environmental claims.
Why this matters
The assumption that a quiet complaints inbox means a clean campaign is no longer safe. Brands running high-volume digital advertising need to apply consistent standards across their entire output. The absence of a complaint is not evidence of compliance.
